Can You Name That River?

We built a “ChatGPT-proof” game for the Canadian Water Resources Association mid-term conference: can you identify any river in Canada just from its peak annual flood hydrograph? Hundreds of plays later, we decided to share it with everyone.

For the Canadian Water Resources Association’s mid-term conference in Moncton, New Brunswick, we wanted a game that no chatbot could quietly win for the people playing it. So we built one: can you identify any river in Canada just from its peak annual flood hydrograph? Study the shape of the curve, pick the river from four multiple-choice options, and see how you score.

It turned out to be more addictive than we expected. Hundreds of rounds later, with players still arguing over telltale snowmelt peaks and rain-driven spikes, we decided it was too fun to keep to ourselves. Subscribers to our Base Flow newsletter got first crack at it.
